Portraits and Self Portraits Intro
Experiment with Lighting
Another element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that you light them. There are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to using light in portraits. Side-lighting can create mood, backlighting and silhouetting your subject to hide their features can be powerful.
I chose this photo because I like how whoever took this put subject on the edge so they could set up the boxing bags to give the photo meaning. Also they used just the right amount of lighting to make the person stand out.
I chose this one because I really like how the coach was framed in the net. It makes the photo a whole lot more interesting and to add to it they took the photo from a high perspective to create depth.
Self Portraits
I chose this photo because I liked how everything was black and white except the phone screen. It helps draw attention to the phone and really gives the picture a center focus.
I picked this picture because i liked how they used the paintbrush to paint a streak across his face. The different colors in the photo really pop out.
Casual Portraits

I picked this one because it uses the rule of lines to draw attention to the man and create depth of field.
Portrait Shoot Plan
My plan for the portraits are to do one of my puppy out in our yard somewhere that there is a good background, i am also going to try to get a good quality picture by getting him to be still. My other picture will be probably be with my dad and his car because he loves his car and we will take it in our driveway with a plain background. For my self portraits I am going to take a picture of me dribbling a basketball and one with me spinning it on my finger either at a gym or on my street.

Introduce a Prop
Add a prop of some kind into your shots and you create another point of interest that can enhance your shot. Yes you might run the risk of taking too much focus away from your main subject but you could also really add a sense of story and place to the image that takes it in a new direction and gives the person you’re photographing an extra layer of depth that they wouldn’t have had without the prop.
Experiment with Subject Expressions
In some portraits it is the expression on the face of your subject that makes the image. Get your subject to experiment with different moods and emotions in your image. Play with extreme emotions
